Young Members Weekend at JBL
Thank you for your interest in the Adirondack Mountain Clubs Young Members Weekend at Johns Brook Lodge! The entire lodge has been reserved for young adults from all over the state (and beyond) to get together, socialize, and hike in the high peaks. This social and recreational program includes two nights lodging at Johns Brook Lodge with six meals, and offers the flexibility to hike what you want, so you can make the weekend as adventurous as youd like. For those less familiar with the area, join a NYS Licensed Guide or volunteer ADK outings leader for the 3.5-mile backpack to and from the lodge, and/or for a high peak hike on Saturday. Those who are comfortable with navigating their way through the Johns Brook Valley have the option of meeting the group at the lodge and planning their own hike for Saturday, perhaps with a few new friends!

The program will start on Friday, August 16, 2019 at the Garden Trailhead in Keene Valley. Please plan to arrive at the Garden by 12:30pm to check in and get ready to hike, as the group will be leaving the trailhead for JBL by 1pm. Parking is available at the Garden Trailhead at a rate of $10.00 per day, and parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. There is free additional parking at Marcy Field, two miles north off Route 73, which is a great place to carpool to the trailhead from, especially if the Garden is full or lacking enough spaces for all participant vehicles. Its recommended that you plan to arrive a little early, in case you need to be shuttled to the trailhead. The trip leader will provide updated information and plans for parking when event gets closer, and help arrange carpools for participants traveling from the same areas interested in carpooling. When we hike out on Sunday, a shuttle will be running approximately every half hour, which can shuttle you back to your car at Marcy Field for a fee of $5.00. In the past, weve had willing participants with cars parked at the Garden also help with shuttling people back to Marcy Field.

You have three options: 1) Meet the group at 12:30pm to hike in with a guide, 2) Take the day to do your own hike and meet the group at the lodge in the afternoon, or 3) Arrive at the Garden at a later time and hike in on your own. If you cant make it to the Garden for the group hike in, you will be responsible for getting yourself to Johns Brook Lodge to check in by 5pm, so everyone is present for dinner and evening activities. Leader will contact participants prior to trip to confirm your travel plans.

For those hiking in as a group on Friday, we will hit the trail by 1pm, hike 3.5 miles, and have plenty of time to settle in at the lodge and get acquainted with this unique property. In addition to the main lodge, there are also cabins and lean-tos for rent year round (ADK members get a 10% discount too), making this area the perfect base camp for your high peaks adventure. The lodge includes a full kitchen where our meals will be prepared by the lodge crew, along with bunks with a pillow and wool blanket for sleeping. You should plan to bring a pillowcase and your own sleeping bag or sheets for comfort and warmth. Well spend Friday night enjoying a hot dinner, getting to know each other, and planning hikes for Saturday. Well likely end up with different groups doing different peaks or routes, and at different paces, based on interests and fitness levels.

Well wake up Saturday to a delicious breakfast and hit the trail to seek out some amazing Adirondack views. A trail lunch will be provided, and youre welcome to bring a few of your own snacks too. All groups will aim to return to the lodge in time for dinner to share adventure stories, followed by a brief presentation or games. On Sunday, well enjoy another hot breakfast and use the morning to relax a little and get packed up to hike 3.5 miles back to the trailhead. We should arrive at the trailhead around lunchtime, allowing for plenty of travel time home for those with a long drive.

No prior backpacking experience is necessary, but prior hiking experience is required. Good physical condition and proper clothing are a must, as the high peaks have rugged terrain and can be challenging at times. Come prepared to spend the days exercising outdoors in unpredictable weather. Participants provide all of their own personal gear (please refer to the clothing and equipment list). ADK will provide meals.
After completing your registration, please spend some time looking through the attached forms and gear list. You must complete the Acknowledgement of Risk, Release of Liability, Medical History, and Photo Release forms prior to program. Proof of health insurance is required to participate. Forms must be submitted at least two weeks prior to program.
If you have any questions about the program or concerning your participation, please contact Stephanie Graudons, Young Member Outreach Coordinator, at stephanie@adk.org.

We look forward to meeting you and having a great time. Come prepared to have fun!
