Map and Compass Fundamentals
Thank you for your interest in an Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) workshop.
Health insurance is required to participate in this program.
The Map & Compass Fundamentals course is hosted at ADK’s Education Yurt Village, located at 1002 Adirondack Loj Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946. This is a great refresher course or the perfect place to learn the basics of field navigation. Please plan on meeting at ADK’s Education Yurt Village at 9:00am, and be prepared to spend time inside the yurt classroom and in the outdoors. Participants should come dressed for unpredictable weather. The class will run until approximately 4:00pm, and parking is included for course participants. We’ll discuss map interpretation, compass use, declination, triangulation, backcountry travel, and how to follow bearings to confidently traverse a landscape. This program will be led by one or more of ADK’s Education Department staff.
Prior hiking experience is recommended. No previous map and compass experience is required. Good physical condition, proper clothing, and proper equipment are a must.
ADK members receive a 10% discount on programs and lodging. To reserve lodging at the Adirondak Loj, please call the Adirondack Mountain Club at (518) 523-3441 or book online.
