Advanced Map & Compass Winter Bushwhack
Thank you for your interest in an Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) workshop.
Health insurance, previous map & compass education, and snowshoeing experience are required for this advanced winter outing.
The one-day Advanced Map & Compass Winter Bushwhack course begins at the McKenzie Mt. and Haystack Mt. Trailhead along Route 86, located between the villages of Ray Brook and Lake Placid, NY. We will do a quick refresher of map bearings, compass bearings, and cover the intricacies of declination at the trailhead before setting off on our 5-mile adventure on/off trail! This course is designed to put your map and compass familiarity into practice. Before registering for this particular course, you should be prepared to snowshoe 5+ arduous miles off-trail in variable snow depths, you should be comfortable reading a map, and you should be eager to follow your compass. Map & Compass or snowshoeing novices are encouraged to complete ADK's fundamentals courses before registering for this bushwhack.
Prepared bushwhackers will meet at the McKenzie Mt. and Haystack Mt. Trailhead along Route 86 at 9:00am. Please remember to bring a lunch, your own map of the region, a compass, and appropriate protective layers / eyewear. Snowshoes can be provided with advanced notice. The bushwhack will cover 5+ miles and climb over 1,000 vertical feet as we snowshoe to destinations in the McKenzie Mt. Wilderness, including Hennessy Mountain and Little Burn Mountain. This program will be led by one or more of ADK’s Education Department staff.
Good physical condition, proper winter clothing, and proper equipment are a must.
