Trail Steward Workshop at Blue Mt.
TRAIL PROJECT: The trail steward workshop is geared towards volunteers who want to learn basic trail maintenance skills. Most participants are aspiring Volunteer Trail Stewards that want to “adopt” a trail section of their own. This workshop is mandatory for Volunteers who want to be involved with the ADK Trail Steward Program. During the workshop Volunteers will receive instruction and will participate in cleaning drainage structures (waterbars, ditches), sidecutting, blowdown removal, and trail marking. At the end of the workshop participants will receive a copy of ADK’s Basic Trail Maintenance Manual.
Non-motorized hand tools will be used to complete the trail projects mentioned above. Volunteers should expect to use tools such as a hazel hoe, hand saw, axe, and pruning shears. Instruction how to use these tools properly and safely will be discussed prior to beginning work by the ADK Crew Leader. Be prepared to work hard physically and to get your hands dirty!
Note that the workshop will require most of the day to complete and plan on returning to the trailhead between 2-4:00 p.m. We will work in virtually any and all weather conditions as long as the ground is not frozen.
MEETING TIME & LOCATION: Please meet the group at 9:00 a.m. at the Blue Mountain trailhead. The trailhead is on NY Route 30/28N, 1.4 miles North of the NY Route 30/28/28N intersection in the Blue Mountain Lake Village. The trailhead is located .1 mile up the hill past the Adirondack Museum on the East side of the road. The parking lot is large and is just off of the highway. After introductions and a review of the day, you will hike up the trail carrying the necessary tools for the workshop along with your own personal belongings including your lunch. Be sure to review the enclosed equipment & gear list so you are prepared for the day. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us at the number provided at the end of the gear list.
