Leave No Trace Trainer
Thank you for your interest in an Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) workshop.
Health insurance is required to participate in this program.
The Leave No Trace Trainer Course will meet at ADK’s Education Yurt Village, located at 1002 Adirondack Loj Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946. This two-day, yurt-based course assists participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low-impact skills. Trainer Courses are designed for educators, guides, agency employees, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Successful graduates of the Trainer Course gain skills to teach Leave No Trace techniques and ethics to their clients, friends, and family.
Participants learn the framework of Leave No Trace and prepare to teach Leave No Trace curriculum in a variety of settings - such as schools, camps, parks, wilderness and front country areas. Workshop topics include Wildland Ethics, the Authority of the Resource technique, and the seven principles of Leave No Trace. This course will be a cooperative group camping experience with the shared responsibility of camp chores, cooking, and decision making while practicing Leave No Trace skills and ethics. The trip will be led by two of ADK’s Education Department staff, who are Leave No Trace Master Educators, NYS Licensed Guides, and professional outdoor educators.
Please plan on meeting in ADK’s Education Yurt Village at 9:00am on Day 1 for introductions and a course overview. While the instructors will lead discussions and provide the research behind every topic, every participant will teach a 15-minute lesson on one of the assigned Leave No Trace principles. Students will be contacted 2-weeks in advance with their assigned topic. We will cover each topic as we hike approximately 3 miles to a backcountry destination. Come prepared to hike in unpredictable conditions. Day 1 will conclude at the Yurt Village. On Day 2, after we complete all lessons on the agenda, we will debrief and wrap-up the course by 4pm.
Group equipment (stoves, fuel bottles, cook sets, water filters, tents, first aid kit, etc.) will be provided by ADK. Participants are expected to provide their own personal equipment. Please let us know well in advance if you require any equipment. Bunks are reserved for participants in our co-ed, communal lodging yurts. Participants should bring their own sleeping bag/warm linens, a pillow, and towels. While the yurts are heated (55 degrees Fahrenheit), the wash house and restrooms are a two-minute walk from the Yurt Village so appropriate clothing and a headlamp are required.
Participants should bring a lunch and snacks for Day 1. All other meals will be provided.
No prior camping experience is necessary for this yurt-based Leave No Trace Trainer course. Good physical condition, proper clothing, and proper equipment are a must.
