Map & Compass Bushwhack
Thank you for your interest in an Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) workshop.
Health insurance is required to participate in this program.
The two-day Map & Compass Bushwhack course is hosted at ADK’s Education Yurt Village, located at 1002 Adirondack Loj Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946. Day #1 is designed to cover the map and compass fundamentals, including map interpretation, declination, triangulation, backcountry travel, and how to follow bearings to confidently traverse a landscape. Day #2 builds on the basics of field navigation and puts these skills into practice as we plan and execute a bushwhack of Mt. Jo (over 700’ of elevation gain and approximately 4 miles of bushwhacking).
Please plan on meeting each day at ADK’s Education Yurt Village at 9:00am. Unless you select the Lodging Package, please remember to bring a lunch and snacks each day. While the yurts are heated, participants should come dressed for unpredictable weather. The class will run until approximately 4:00pm each day and parking is included for course participants. This program will be led by one or more of ADK’s Education Department staff.
Prior hiking experience is recommended. No previous map and compass experience is required. Good physical condition, proper clothing and equipment are a must.
An optional Course & Accommodations Package is available for up to 10 participants, which includes instruction, course materials, parking, lodging for Friday and Saturday nights, and meals starting with dinner Friday evening through lunch on Sunday. To get the most out of the workshop, participants are encouraged to stay right at ADK’s facilities. Bunks are reserved for participants in our co-ed, communal lodging yurts. Package participants should bring their own sleeping bag/warm linens, a pillow, and towels. While the yurts are heated (55 degrees Fahrenheit), the wash house and restrooms are a two-minute walk from the Yurt Village so appropriate clothing and a headlamp are required. If you are participating in the Lodging Package, you may arrive on Friday anytime between 2pm and 6pm to claim your bunk and to get settled. Dinner will be served promptly at 6:15pm in the Adirondak Loj Dining Room. Breakfast will be served at 7:00am each morning in the Loj as well, but be sure that you return to the Yurt Village by 9:00am for instruction.
ADK members receive a 10% discount on programs and lodging. To reserve lodging at the Adirondak Loj, please call the Adirondack Mountain Club at (518) 523-3441 or book online.
