ACA Flatwater Canoe Safety & Rescue Clinic
Thank you for your interest in an Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) workshop.
Health insurance is required to participate in this program.
The American Canoe Association (ACA) Flatwater Canoe Safety & Rescue Clinic is a half-day course that teaches the skills required to perform deep-water rescues, prevent illness, and to prepare for your next water-based adventure. We’ll also discuss proper paddling gear and practice various reentry methods in the event that you capsize your vessel. You will go home with increased confidence in your ability to perform a rescue when it really counts. The program will be led by one or more of ADK’s Education Department staff. This course also satisfies the New York State Guide’s License basic water safety requirement.
The course will be hosted at the Adirondak Loj Dining Room, located at 1002 Adirondack Loj Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946, and will start at 10:00am. The lessons are taught on nearby Heart Lake, which is a motor-free flatwater lake with extraordinary views of the High Peaks. Being a relatively small body of water, it is protected from moderate wind and waves. There is easy access to shore and restroom facilities. The program will run until approximately 2:00pm.
No prior paddling experience is necessary. Good physical condition, proper clothing, and proper equipment are a must. ADK has canoes, PFD’s, and paddles available for you to borrow, but feel free to bring your own equipment.
ADK members receive a 10% discount on programs and lodging. To reserve lodging at the Adirondak Loj, please call the Adirondack Mountain Club at (518) 523-3441 or book online.
